East and West students join together for Relay For Life

June 9, 2025

For 12 straight hours, beginning Saturday night and into Sunday morning, the track at High School West was used. Not for running, but rather, to raise awareness and money in the fight against cancer. We are proud to announce that the °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ¹ÙÍøRelay for Life event, featuring students from both East and West, raised over $86,000 in total donations!

This past weekend the °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ¹ÙÍøRelay for Life event was held at °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ¹ÙÍøHigh School West. Relay For Life is a team fundraising event where team members take turns walking around the track. The event culminated the hard work put in by students from HSE and HSW all year.

"This year we want to thank our Event Leadership Team from HSW (Eleni Caldarera, Maribella Marciano, Isabella Paliwoda, Kalle Friedmann), HSE (Amira Abdallah, Rabia Chattha, Maggie Worontzoff, Ryan Dart), and all Relay teams for all their hard work and dedication," said High School West advisor, Dillon Archer. "These eight students will also receive a Certificate of Merit from Senator Mario Mattera for their hard work and dedication throughout the year. We already can't wait for next year!”

It was 12 hours in length and each team was asked to have a member on the track at all times to signify that cancer never sleeps. Cancer patients don't stop because they're tired, and for one night, neither did our SCSD community. Each team set up a themed campsite at the event and continues their fundraising efforts by collecting donations for food, goods, games, and activities that go to the American Cancer Society. This money counted towards their overall team fundraising goal.
